Birthday's

Yesterday we celebrated my eldest brother's Birthday who turned 21! He just finished his 2nd year at university and our family number returned to 6 on Wednesday. Calder and Dad took a couple days off to pick him up from the city and they made it a boy's trip. Meanwhile mom, Blythe and I stayed home by our lonesome…we had a fun time though, we made low calorie brownies and ate it with low fat ice cream while watching a couple of episodes of Downtown Abbey :) Overall this week went by really slowly, but eating a turkey dinner and then having butterscotch pie and whip cream really helped make it worth it! Next Thursday I'm sooo…excited our school is going to the Citadel in the city and watching Sound of Music! {kind of ironic because I heard about it after I published my blog post on A Few of my Favourite Things!} Well ta ta for now :)

This is just something I've been listening to all week, Dino: The Essential Dean Martin Album

Spring has Sprung

Did I not say the snow would go away? Well it basically all disappeared on Friday with the rain. I spent this Saturday at our acreage, snapping pictures but, mostly reading. Our dogs, Ezra (4 or 5 yrs. old) and Seth (1), followed me around as I snapped these pictures. I was also experimenting with this new photo editing site, PicMonkey, I was originally just using iPhoto. Well I hope you have a good rest of the week :)

A few of my Favourite Things

When the dog bites, when the bee stings, when I'm feeling sad, I simply remember my favorite things and then I don't feel so bad!  If you've ever watched The Sound of Music with Julie Andrews, you'll know of the song, "A Few of my Favourite Things." As Maria is going to bed one by one the children wander into her room because they are scared of the thunder storm outside, to calm them and keep their minds off of the storm she sings them this song. And now here are a few of my favourite things:
  • twirly skirts/dresses
  • curling up to a good book beside a raging fireplace with hot milk
  • old fashioned buttons
  • silver white winters that melt into spring
  • Emily of New Moon by L.M. Montgomery
  • listening to The Fray
  • stripes
  • walking out into a wintry night, snow falling softly and the earth blanketed with snow
  • Canadian Geese returning for summer
  • Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
  • creative writing
  • the sound of rain falling as I go to sleep
  • listening/singing to music as I crochet
  • our dogs, Ezra and Seth
  • listening to Mat Kearney
  • baking
  • a field of wildflowers
  • Jane Austen novels
  • canola fields
  • windy days at the beach
  • listening to Birdy
  • drinking tea
  • watching Pride and Prejudice {with Keira Knightley and Matthew MacFadyen}
  • moccasins
  • pumpkin…anything!
  • the Harry Potter Series
  • cheesecake
  • our whole family together
  • singing at Church
  • lying on the grass looking up at the stars
  • picnics
  • reading short stories
  • new school supplies
  • rereading my favourite books
  • listening to Dino Martin and La Vie en Rose by Madeleine Peyroux
  • thunder storms
  • fresh cut flowers
  • geometric shapes
  • chenille bedspreads
  • walking in the woods
  • picking a bouquet of wildflowers
What are a few of your favourite things?

Saturdays

My creation
After living in Northern Alberta for like my whole life I probably should have been prepared for this but it seems to surprise us every year. Since my post that had pictures of the hoar frost on all the trees, it's warmed up considerably. The snow was 95% melted, there was barely any puddles anymore and it seemed like spring had come. We all took the time to put away our winter coats hoping to never see them again for quite sometime. I even began wondering if I should stop wearing tights under my skirts and dresses! But alas Friday afternoon came, it had been raining all morning and the previous night, and as the temperature dropped so did great big snowflakes. It hasn't stopped. In the last 24 hours we've accumulated 2 ft of snow, more than we've had all winter at one time. I suppose it is good moisture and it will be gone within the next couple of weeks but, I'm thinking rain would have sufficed. My creationI spent this Saturday inside making a Spring Agenda to bring with me to each class and write down notes and reminders as well as due dates. Sometime this week I'm going to take a trip to our local thrift store and grab a couple old hardcover books, gut them and then insert my own binding of papers, for a journal or perhaps an Art Journal…who knows but I'll share some pictures of it when all is said and done. Have a good rest of the weekend! I hope yours is more spring-y then mine will be :)

Happy Easter!

This week went by sooo…fast! Our school had the week off for spring break and I've had a lot of lazy days just bumming around. My mother is a photographer and I was deemed the assistant for most of the summer weddings {as long as it doesn't interfere with school}. A couple of weeks back she ordered her back-up body {and as long as her camera works smoothly, the assistant, moi, gets to snap her own pictures from a different perspective}. So naturally I've taken this week off to get to know the camera and practice a little bit. This is what has come out of it this week :) I don't think there half bad for a newbie!
My creation
Since Easter was coming up I've done a lot of baking {some for Easter dinner at my Aunt's and some just because}! The first and last photos in this collage {diagonal from each other}, is in our top favourite recipes {and all citrus/shortbread lovers will think so as well}, it's borrowed from one of Martha Stewart's Holiday magazines, Lime Meltaways. The cake I decided on a whim to bake on Sunday {iced and eaten on Monday at my Grandma's house, watching an Oilers game}, I found this on Pinterest, the chocolate cake with {salted caramel} frosting, and it brought me too Kimberly Taylor images. Okay last but certainly not least, my youngest brother, Calder, helped me accomplish this shot, willingly putting on a dress shirt {pinching him a couple times in the process of unbuttoning the sleeves} and throwing on our older brother's old vest {Christian}! With Easter coming, as well as our family number returning to 6 again, we had to make a couple batches of Hasty Tasty Hot Cross Buns, a family favourite. Despite the fact that we had to grudgingly giving up the raisins for currants {I managed to get Christian to admit that currants were just smaller versions of raisins, but he had to add "without the poison"}
My creation
Well that's all for now :) I hope everyone has a brilliant Easter, enjoying family and friends.
